Gustafsson и басист DLer Ronnie Olson решили организовать группу в
стиле death – то есть бескомпромиссную, быструю и брутальную команду.
Основные влияния – Sodom, Slayer, Celtic frost, Entombed и Napalm
death, и именно благодаря этим группам ребята сразу поняли, в каком
направлении им нужно двигаться. Вскоре брат Urbans, Tobias, который
тогда играл вместе с DLed в СПИД-металл группе Eureka, присоединился к
команде в качестве ударника. В апреле 1990, в своём родном городке
Forshaga, Vomitory дали свой первый концерт. Вскоре после этого Ronnie
почувтсовал, что хочет заниматься исключительно вокалом, и Bengt Sund
присоединился к группе в качестве басиста. Чтобы добиться для нового
материала того звучания, которое он заслуживал, Vomitory понадобился
второй гитарист, которым стал приятель Bengts Ulf Dalegren в июне 1991.

года, Witchhunt records выпустили сингл Vomitory, под названием
"Moribund". За первые два месяца было продано 1600 - 2000 копий.
Обложка первого тиража так ни разу и не переиздавалась, а потому сейчас
считается раритетом. Прошло немного времени после выхода сингла, и
Bengt Sund «попросили» из группы. Так он и сделал, а на его место
пришёл Thomas Bergqvist, который вместе с DLing и Ulf Dalegren играл в
дум-металл группе Nezgaroth.
После выпуска сингла интерес к Vomitory проявили сразу несколько
звукозаписывающих компаний, так что ребята в новом составе отправились
в студию для записи рекламной плёнки из 5 песен для будущего
сотрудничества. Однако, ничего не произошло. Поэтому вместо того, чтобы
глупо ждать предложения, Vomitory в марте 1994 года записали
демо-плёнку "Through sepulchral shadows". Благодаря ей Vomitory
получили массу положительных отзывов в журналах со всего мира. Было
продано 1000 копий.
В апреле 1995 группа отправилась в Польшу, для небольшого, но очень
успешного турне по всей стране. Впервые Vomitory покинули пределы
Швеции, и это стало очень важным опытом для команды, ибо польские
фанаты вели себя просто великолепно!
В начале 1996 Vomitory подписали контракт с Fadeless records,
Нидерланды, и в апреле записали свой первый полноценный диск под
названием "Raped in their own blood". Он вышел в апреле того же года.
После выпуска "Raped in their own blood" Thomas и Ronnie покинули
Vomitory. Их заменили Erik Rundqvist (бас) и Jussi Linna (вокал).
В июле 1998 Vomitory наконец-то записали свой второй альбом
"Redemption", но он не был выпущен до марта 1999 года. Этим релизом
Vomitory ещё раз доказали, что они верны своему стилю: дэт-металлу
старой школы, - и по прежнему не согласны идти на компромисс. За
последние два года Vomitory два раза были в европейских турне – два
путешествия, когда они смогли познакомиться со всеми своими
поклонниками, которые помогли им просуществовать целых 10 лет.

Vomitory is a Swedish death metal band formed in 1989 by guitarist Urban Gustafsson and bassist Ronnie Olson. Influenced by bands such as Sodom, Napalm Death, Bathory, Slayer, and Venom, the band has released a total of seven albums, and are currently signed to Metal Blade Records.

This interview with the drummer Tobias Gustafsson of Vomitory was done by Bruno Zamora in October 2003.
Many have thought that Death Metal is dead… Many thought it is now. But
that is if you are as dead and stupid not to know what's going on
around : Death Metal prevails! There is no need to meddle with kids and
their "horrible looks”; there is no need to wear all that, as you will
be ashamed of what you are. This band right here, VOMITORY will boil
your guts out and let them all flow like a rusted pus on a damaged
faucet - leaving you bloodless and gagged to death! Of course, myself
never liked those stupid Porno Death Metal and all the likes of that
life-loving concept. All those idiots still call themselves as Gore or
shall say: Porn/Gore Death Metal. Since when that Porno has been
associated with Gore, may I ask?! Only those self-proclaimed brutal
"men" claim for such a word. And well, any true Death Metal maniacs
should not bother themselves supporting those kind of ridiculous forms
of "metal". It will just degrade the true elite meaning of Death Metal.
And here we are lucky to have one of the most outstanding Death Metal
bands of the genre, Vomitory! Traditional Swedish Death Metal is now on
the loose…
Once, we've seen this "Death Metal is dead" among zines, but
Vomitory has been so faithful playing DM without losing an intensity.
How do you adapt on such a changing climate without harming that DM
spirit inside Vomitory?
We just play the style we like and that
happens to be death metal the Vomitory way. We're not in this for the
money or something like that so we have never seen any reason to change
our style because of the changes in the musical climate. If it would be
for the money we would definitely not have been playing death metal or
even metal at all since it's not where the big money is anyway.
Especially not within death metal, that's for sure! Our gods within the
brutal music are more or less still the same as they were ten years ago
- Slayer, Napalm Death, Entombed, Grave and Terrorizer - and that's one
of the reasons why we still are exploring the path of brutal death
metal.
Searching for an identity is not an easy task. Many bands were
falling into some cliché styled Metal Rather than being "original". Do
you think you are now getting out on the typical "Swedish Death" and
bringing out more heavier/faster songs that we can call it as for
Vomitory fans only?
Yes, I think you're right in a way.
Vomitory has never really tried to be original only for the sake of
being original. We've always went for quality instead of trying to be
as original as possible and one can clearly hear that on all our
releases, including the demos. On our last two albums, though, I guess
we've become more original with our style but without losing contact
with our roots - i.e. the traditional brutal Swedish death metal. And
the fact that we've always stuck to our roots and never compromised has
also made us original in a way. Not many bands play this kind of death
metal anymore, and that itself makes Vomitory kind of original.
Do you consider Wilko (Fadeless Rex) as a big stepping stone for the
"career" of Vomitory? I think he have printed well-responsed flyers way
back then. And as well as Mangled were also heading on their way to the
top. Strong opinion I have is the fact that Fadeless really did a
better job for both bands. What came up on you to shift on Metalblade?
